The Grouchy Ladybug
I gained the most feedback from K3 from telling the story "The Goruchy Ladybug" among the three classes. Because of its repetitive patterns in this storybook, kids spontaenously said out sentences like "Hey, you. Want to fight?" or "No. You are not big engough." It was a fullfilling experience to see kids incidentally pick up the English words or sentences. How I love to take part in children's speaking vocabulary development!
K1 has been my headache class. I might need to consult the teachers what language I should use to conduct my class. It probably will work better when both English and Chinese are used.
I. Book Talk
Introduce the title, and the author. Explain what the word "grouchy" means. Give examples.
II. Story
III. Role play
Due to the time constraint, this part was not completed. I told the class that I will bring
the book along next class, then we will act out the story.
I don't think I successfully brought out the theme "sharing" from the book. Kids were excited to see the animals the grouchy ladybug encontered. However, they probably did not pay attention to the other friendly ladybug. They might not have any idea why the author arranged the friendly ladybug in the story. My bad. I should have introduced the first page when two ladybugs were fighting for the aphids, slowed down my pace and showed the picture around. I should have children compare and contrast the diffence between the pages where aphids were on the leaf and where half of the aphids were left on the leaf. And also I should draw children's attention to the first conversation and the last conversation between the ladybugs .
